Why is Circuit Grounding Important?

Firstly, the two principal purposes of connecting your system to earth ground:

  1. Stabilize the voltage to the earth during normal operation (think of the earth as an anchor to the system voltage)
  2. Limit the voltage rise created by lightning, line surges, and unintentional contact with higher voltages

Secondly, the three main purposes for correctly applying ground:

  1. Safety: connect to the ground to provide an alternative path for fault current to flow
  2. Limit Voltage and its Variation: connect signals to the ground to stabilize them & keep them from floating
  3. Limit the Induced Voltage Magnitude: connect to the ground to limit the voltage rise induced on powered circuits

How do ground fault circuit interrupters work?

ABB’s CoriolisMaster flowmeter has received recognition for its high levels of accuracy, gaining custody transfer standards approval. We live in a connected world.

The IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) has forever changed how we do things by making ordinary devices intelligent, and everyday tasks more efficient.

Acromag’s Ethernet Remote I/O Modules Add EtherNet/IP Communication

 Ethernet expandable I/O modules now offer field-selectable EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP/IP networking protocol.

Acromag’s new BusWorks® NT series remote I/O modules are now enhanced with EtherNet/IP support. Ethernet industrial protocol, EtherNet/IP, is traditional Ethernet combined with an industrial application layer protocol targeted to industrial automation. These high-performance Ethernet I/O modules include remote monitoring and control, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, building HVAC energy consumption, and more.

These modules were tested at an ODVA, Open DeviceNet Vendors Association, vendor-independent Test Service Provider, and received an ODVA Declaration of Conformity. This organization confirms interoperability across vendors and systems.

NTE Ethernet I/O models have dual RJ45 ports and a webserver with Modbus TCP/IP and Ethernet/IP communication to monitor or control the internal I/O channels. An integrated DIN rail bus allows connections of up to three NTX expansion I/O modules. Each I/O module adds up to 16 input or output signals allowing a mix of voltage, current, temperature, TTL, and relay control signals networked on one IP address. The space-saving design requires only 25mm of DIN rail per module. Ethernet I/O modules distribute 9-32V DC power along the DIN rail bus to expansion modules. Hazardous location approvals, high noise immunity, and -40 to 70°C operation make this I/O ideal for use in harsh environments.

“NT Series Ethernet I/O modules are user-configurable for Ethernet/IP or Modbus/TCP, offering a convenient solution for engineers with multi-protocol control systems,” states Robert Greenfield, Acromag’s Business Development Manager.

The NT2000 Series offers a broad variety of I/O signal processing options. Nine I/O configurations are available as either NTE Ethernet I/O or NTX expansion I/O models. Analog I/O models feature eight differential or sixteen single-ended inputs for monitoring current or voltage signals. Discrete I/O models provide 16 tandem input/output channels with either active high/low input or sinking/sourcing output. A six-channel mechanical relay output model is also available. For temperature monitoring, a thermocouple input model supports many sensor types and also millivolt ranges. More models will release over the coming months for additional I/O functions.

Profinet communication is planned for release soon. Each module will support all three protocols which are selectable using any web browser to configure the network settings and I/O operation. The modules typically function as a network slave, but also offer Acromag’s i2o® peer-to-peer communication technology to transfer data between modules directly without a host or master in between. Acromag Expands Their Line of Ethernet Remote I/O Modules with RTD Temperature Measurement Options

New high-density Ethernet I/O modules monitor RTD or resistance sensor types for industrial applications

NT2620 Ethernet I/O Modules

Acromag’s newest addition to the Busworks® NT Series of expandable remote Ethernet I/O modules is the NT2620 Series RTD/resistance module. Designed to be a cost-effective modular solution, it supports four RTD/resistance inputs and two bidirectional discrete digital I/O channels to monitor temperature limits with conditional logic.

NTE Ethernet I/O models have dual RJ45 ports and a webserver with Modbus TCP/IP or EtherNet/IPTM communication to monitor or control the internal I/O channels.

The Modbus TCP/IP or EtherNet/IPTM communication is field-selectable saving costs of additional modules. An integrated DIN rail bus allows the connection of up to three NTX expansion I/O modules. The space-saving design requires only 25mm of DIN rail per module. Ethernet I/O modules distribute 9-32V DC power along the DIN rail bus to expansion modules.

Ethernet expandable I/O modules can now process IF/THEN/ELSE logic for rule-based I/O operation

Acromag’s new BusWorks® NT series remote I/O modules are now enhanced with conditional logic. The conditional logic increases the functionality with a system of rules that allows highly complicated decisions based on relatively simple “yes/no” questions. For example, reading an analog or digital input value can trigger an action to happen as a result.

This value could control a relay when one or more conditions occur. Another example would be when a discrete input is ON and a temperature threshold is crossed. More complex math computation and logic are also an option.

Conditional logic is configured on the NT’s built-in web configuration page. No programming is required. The modules support up to 64 conditions using IF/THEN/ELSE statements.

NTE Ethernet I/O models have dual RJ45 ports and a webserver with Modbus TCP/IP and Ethernet/IP communication to monitor or control the internal I/O channels. An integrated DIN rail bus allows connections of up to three NTX expansion I/O modules. Each I/O module adds up to 16 input or output signals allowing a mix of voltage, current, temperature, TTL, and relay control signals networked on one IP address.

The space-saving design requires only 25mm of DIN rail per module. Ethernet I/O modules distribute 9-32V DC power along the DIN rail bus to expansion modules. Hazardous location approvals, high noise immunity, and -40 to 70°C operation make this I/O ideal for use in harsh environments.

“With this new conditional logic capability, users can easily implement rule-based control functions without programming,” states Robert Greenfield, Acromag’s Business Development Manager.

The NT2000 Series offers a broad variety of I/O signal processing options. Nine I/O configurations are available as either NTE Ethernet I/O or NTX expansion I/O models. Analog I/O models feature eight differential or sixteen single-ended inputs for monitoring current or voltage signals. Discrete I/O models provide 16 tandem input/output channels with either active high/low input or sinking/sourcing output.

A six-channel mechanical relay output model is also available. For temperature monitoring, a thermocouple input model supports many sensor types and also millivolt ranges. More models will release over the coming months for additional I/O functions.

Profinet communication is planned for release soon. Each module will support all three selectable protocols using any web browser to configure the network settings and I/O operation. The modules typically function as a network slave, but also offer Acromag’s i2o® peer-to-peer communication technology to transfer data between modules directly without a host or master in between. Multicast capability is included.

10 Reasons to Specify Valve Manifolds

Specifying the right valve manifold for an application can sometimes be a complex and difficult decision, especially with so many options out there and with many factors to consider. Here are 10 reasons why a valve manifold could be the right solution for your application.

1. Where space is at a premium
Valve manifolds provide the flexibility of various compact body sizes and widths. This gives users the option to either control more valves within the same footprint or configure the same number of solenoids within a reduced space, bringing value to customers who are concerned with product footprint. If IP rating is not a priority or you’re specifying a valve manifold to be used in a control cabinet, then a Multipole IP40 version provides an even more compact unit than compared to a standard IP65 version. With a Multipole IP40 version, the connectors can be positioned either vertically or horizontally to best suit the application.

2. Ease of installation
Mounting a valve manifold is often an easily overlooked step in the configuration process. Valves manifolds provide wall mounting capability and come with pre-installed DIN Rail fasteners. This provides a wide range of flexible mounting options without needing to order additional components later.

3. Field maintenance and valve replacement is made easy
A simple plug-in sub-base design enables quick and easy valve replacement which can help minimize process downtime. Valve slices are removed by simply unscrewing two screws on each valve slice and new valves are then added using the same method. The silencers and push-in fittings used on the manifold can be easily replaced too. On the other hand, if your application requirements change or your specified valve manifold needs to be adapted, expansion kits are offered which can be used to readily expand a valve manifold in the field.

4. Allows users to save energy and money
Why use the maximum pressure for your application if you don’t need it? On a valve manifold using up to four ISEMs (Intermediate Supply & Exhaust Modules) can be combined on a single manifold allowing up to four pressure zones for pilot and exhaust (by using blanking plugs in between the zones). The generation of compressed air consumes energy and costs money. By separating the valves
into zones and using just the required pressure for the zone, users can save both money and energy.

5. Where operating pressure is low
Valve manifolds provide a low minimum operating pressure requirement of just 2 bar, meaning less pressure is required for the valve slices to function. With an externally piloted supply, the valve manifolds can also work with -1 bar (vacuum). Making them suitable for use in a wide range of applications including operators who run at lower pressures in their factory.

6. For improved productivity and high throughput
Valve manifolds provide high working frequency allowing them to be specified in applications requiring high switching frequency (e.g: packaging, textile etc.). As higher switching frequency allows for more valve cycles, this translates into improved productivity and greater throughput in a process.

7. Providing IO-Link connectivity
Most valve manifolds offer IO-Link connectivity in addition to other Industrial Ethernet communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET, Multipole). IO-Link provides insight and feedback from the valve manifold device allowing for condition monitoring and process diagnostics. Monitoring the number of valve cycles and if any valves short circuit or fail remotely allows users to minimize downtime due to faults.

8. Readily available kits of accessories, spare valves, and replacements
Spare valves, blanking plates, sub-bases, wiring, and cables are readily available for the valve manifolds. If the application or machine needs changing or adapting, extension kits are available allowing users to add more valves onto the manifold as well as swap control modules to adapt to a different communication protocol.

When you connect older serial devices and equipment to an Ethernet network, it’s important to take steps to minimize potential cybersecurity risks.
